Women are unique; with unique biologies, strengths, disparities, and genetic makeups that transform with age. Estrogen levels fluctuate, organs shift to allow the body to carry and give birth to children, perimenopause begins, and chronic disease risk heightens. Although statistics confirm women may live longer than men, the data also shows they do not always live better.
Despite this, little research exists to tell us why, and until the 1990’s, most healthcare research was done on men. Women were largely absent from the prevailing healthcare story. So, how do we change this trend by ensuring women and equity-deserving people are central to the story? The answer lives here—with us.
At Women’s, we fundamentally believe that when we solve for women, we solve for society. When we listen to women, we listen to community.
Women deserve care that caters to their unique needs. When women and equity-focused health research is sustained through funding, and patients are included in its design, we can ensure that care, practice, and research evolve as women do.
From the Women’s Cardiovascular Rehabilitation program to our Women’s Age Lab, to the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers, we are leading the charge in research and care that meets the needs of women and equity deserving people in our communities and across the world..
